Vanderbilt arrived in western North Carolina in the late 1800s to build his grandiose Biltmore Estate, he had visions even grander than erecting the largest private home in America. Vanderbilt wanted a working estate, one with farms and forests that paid for themselves—and were managed responsibly. He hired Gifford Pinchot as Biltmore’s first forester and eventually purchased some 125,000 acres of land southwest of Asheville, which he called Pisgah Forest. In 1895, German forester Dr. Carl Alvin Schenck took Pinchot’s place and founded Biltmore Forest School, the nation’s first school of forestry.

When passenger train service ended in Edgemont in the late 1930s, the depot was moved a short distance and adapted as a private residence. Two roads branch out from Edgemont: Forest Road 464 and Forest Road 981. Both take you to trailheads for some of the finest hiking in Pisgah National Forest, including access to spectacular waterfalls. Get a trail map and spend some time exploring the roads and trails. Continuing north on the route from Edgemont, you climb out of the valley on another winding forest road to reach the community of Gragg, nestled under the shadow of Yonahlossee Road (see Route 2).
