However, this logic may be in error. Science has long recognized that many natural categories are ill defined. There is no simple set of criteria features that determines the membership of all exemplars of a category. Category membership is often not based on characteristics measurable on dichotomous scales (present–­absent), but rather on characteristics that can only be assessed on continuous scales, where measurement is relative. For example, most of us would agree that we naturally perceive a category of tall people, but how would we define the category?

Sherer and Schreibman (2005) also reported that children with ASD who displayed more approach and less avoidance had better responses to pivotal response training. In a third study, Garon et al. (2009) observed 34 of 138 infant siblings of children with autism who were ultimately diagnosed with ASD. Sixteen of the children in this sample displayed relatively clear symptoms by 24 months, and 18 expressed clear symptom presentation later, at 36 months of age. One distinguishing characteristics of these two subgroups was that ASD was identified later in life for children with higher ratings of behavioral approach.
