The levels to record and playback processors must be identical, so a 700 Hz reference tone is recorded at the start of a tape to establish the correct playback level. Compression A compressor avoids overloading the tape on loud signals. A threshold control sets the starting level below which the signal is unaffected. A slope control selects the degree of compression. Thus a 2:1 ratio reduces signals above the threshold by a half; a 4:1 by a quarter. Limiting All signals above a set level are reduced to that level.
Current drain is about 5 mA. f. capacitor No polarising voltage is needed for these although a 12 V supply is required. m. oscillator circuit is tuned by the capacitor, thus producing frequency modulations in sympathy with the sound. An integral detector converts these to audio which is fed out via the cable. Apart from a lower supply voltage, the advantage is avoidance of electrostatic tension of the diaphragm and the risk of flashover. c. supply restricts their use mainly to recording and broadcast studios where the highest quality is required at any cost.
Dolby A noise reduction reduces this by 10dB. It splits the signal into two paths, the main and the sidechain in which it is divided into four parallel paths, each responding to a specific frequency band. These are: low-80 Hz; 80 Hz-3 kHz; 3 kHz-high; 9 kHz-high. The signals in each are progressively compressed above a — 40 dB threshold thus emphasizing those below it. These are then added to the main path and recorded. After replay, the sidechain frequencies are subtracted so restoring the original balance while reducing lowlevel recording noise.
