Mayer. The motion picture studio, a converted stable on Vine Street, looked out of place amid the beautiful pepper trees whose feathery palm leaves hung down on either side of the street. Uncle Cecil’s “studio” was a dull, dark green, wooden building stained with the residue of the pepper tree bark. The studio, within easy walking distance of the de Mille home, was conveniently located for Agnes’s father. Often in the early evening Agnes saw her father and uncle walking across the vacant lot, silhouetted by a beautiful, fiery red sunset.
As Agnes neared the end of high school, dancing came to mean only endless practice and exhaustion. Following graduation in 1922, she spent much of the summer thinking The Long Search for Success about her future. Toward the end of the summer she reached a decision — she would give up dance and go to college. Not surprisingly, William was delighted with his daughter’s announcement. UCLA AND THE RETURN TO DANCE Wanting to spread her wings away from Anna and William, Agnes planned to attend Mills College in northern California.
Despite Henry de Mille’s wishes that his sons not pursue careers in the theater, both Cecil B. and William, Agnes’s father (at left), did just that. William’s career as a playwright was steady and successful. Cecil struggled a bit at first but finally found immense success as a pioneer in the emerging medium of motion pictures. This photograph of the brothers was taken in Hollywood around 1915. visited the de Mille house. Agnes marveled at the grace, sophistication, and style of the women, and the dapper, smartly dressed men who called on her father and mother.
