Upon completion of the program, criterion tests in listening comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking were administered. T h e first few students went through the program without being tutored. T h e experimenter observed the student through the oneway glass, made item-specific notes in a copy of the programmed text and general remarks in a separate notebook, helped remedy problems with the equipment, clarified instructions upon request by the student, but gave no help with the Spanish content.

T h e speaking test is modeled after Pimsleur's A French Speaking Proficiency Test* and consists of four parts: vocabulary recall, pronunciation, grammatical usage, and fluency. Objectivity in scoring is increased, since for each part of the test only one aspect of speaking performance is evaluated. Parts I and I I I are designed so that the items are either right or wrong. In Parts II and IV, rating scales are used. In our study, students' responses were recorded and then judged by three native-speaking Spanish teachers.

2. Can some aspects of foreign language competence be better taught by Ρ SI than others, and if so, what are these aspects? This question now seems essentially unanswerable because it assumes that different aspects of foreign language performance can be measured on a comparable basis. If the question is rephrased to ask whether there are any aspects of foreign language competence that cannot be taught by Ρ S I, a meaningful answer can be given. From the evidence collected here, it would seem that there are no aspects of foreign language competence that cannot be taught at least to some degree by PSI.
