The first impression is made from the surface of your design. Discovery: The user is exposed to the surface of the experience and interacts with it. At this point, all of the elements of your interface design will intrigue the user into digging deeper into the experience. He can identify with the style, and the structure is intuitive. At this point, your surface design is secondary to the content, but the structure of the navigation and content is what is keeping your user engaged.
