The powerful tools in Photoshop allow photographers to do things that weren’t possible with film photography. 3 shows an original image and the new image that I created in Photoshop using advanced techniques, such as combining multiple images and layers, using special filters, and using custom layer blending styles. Another option with TIFF files in Photoshop is the ability to save layers. This seems pretty cool, except that few image-editing applications can open all of the layers of a layered TIFF file. If I’m saving a layered file and planning to use Photoshop to edit it, then I save it as a PSD file, Photoshop’s native file format. If you’re worried about hard drive space, go ahead and save your layered files in the compressed TIFF format. Just be aware that they will take longer to save and to open. Because I don’t use layered TIFF files I have Photoshop warn me when I forget to flatten a TIFF file before saving it.
Even if the JPEG is of the highest quality (least compression), it represents a fraction of what the camera actually saw.
