Although we find a characteristic Erdrichian humor in The Beet Queen (particularly in the tales of Chez Sita, the naughty box, the Christmas pageant, and the birthday party), there is also a pervasive note of loneliness and dislocation. Its characters and families are separated and do not much love one another. Letters are written but not sent, sent but delivered to the wrong people, or delivered too late. Gifts are sent but intercepted or used for the wrong purposes. The three Adare children in particular— Karl, Mary, and Jude—are in a state of perpetual dislocation.

C. 1898 Eli Kashpaw is born to Kashpaw and Margaret. Early 1900s Fleur nearly drowns the first time.
