Further, drawing on propositional knowledge outside the arts, researchers without an arts background bring forth other theoretical underpinnings and insights. The type of arts-related research that such researchers might engage with is more akin to artsinformed inquiry, also referred to by Ewing and Hughes (2008:516) as ‘expressive construction’, the focus being to communicate new understandings through creative means, yet without those creative means being considered as works of art. Whilst those new to the field of arts-related research may be interested in how the arts can enrich and extend qualitative methodologies and epistemologies (Daykin, 2008), tensions exist and issues of quality and representation remain.
As Sullivan (2006:20) contends arts-related methods need to be rigorous, but at the same time inventive, so as to reveal: ‘the rich imaginative intellect as it is encountered and enacted within individual, social and cultural settings’. Whilst expansion of inquiry is encouraged, the question of how such practices can be embraced within existing research paradigms is questioned. Denzin argues that a confidence is required within the field to follow different yet complementary pathways to create knowledge production.
Along with enlivening research practice for social science researchers, arts-related research also offers approaches for artists to examine their own practice, which has the potential to open new avenues of knowledge, not least in redefining what contribution to knowledge an ‘artwork’ makes. As argued by Hecq and Banagan (2009), just because an artwork has been produced does not mean it is groundbreaking in terms of knowledge production. In formulating a purpose therefore, it is important to consider what forms of aesthetic knowing will be considered of benefit for methodological, procedural and even political change.
