Even with the support of a new, deeppocketed owner, resuscitating this magazine just seemed desperate and hopeless. But we kept at it, and in the year since then, Businessweek has made a startling transformation. As you probably know, it’s now called Bloomberg Businessweek, and it bears almost no relation to the old magazine. Years of corporate disinterest, revenue shortfalls and job cuts had left the survivors scared, tired and depressed – in hardly any condition to put out an exciting, enriching, successful magazine. Shortly before I got there, Businessweek had been purchased by Bloomberg from McGraw Hill for not much more than the assumption of certain debts and liabilities. A handful of media observers considered it a steal, noting that global brands are all but impossible to create from scratch and that even in its lapsed condition, the Businessweek name was still recognized all over the world.
